At Lean N Oak Farm, we take pride in raising a healthy flock with great genetics to be desired by others. To achieve this goal, one must continuously acquire knowledge and be willing to help others. With that being said, we are lifetime members of the Painted Desert Sheep Society and members of their Facebook group page. This group of folks consists of many of the founding society members, experienced breeders and folks new to this breed. This is one of the nicest group of people you will ever meet. We have found them willing to help those of us who are learning how to care for our flock. While this breed is pretty hardy there is always different challenges required. It is sure nice to be able to ask a question of these folks and get great insight.
Secondly, we operate on a very small scale. We have 12 Ewes and 9 rams. We will stay around this head count to allow us to really focus on our animals and because we have limited barn space. The barn space is imperative because we secure our sheep in the barn each night to protect from predators. Many have invested in a livestock guardian dog, but we have chosen this route for now.
Lastly, our sheep have the best care and attention from birth until they go to their forever homes. They are fed grain, quality hay and have rotational grazing on well fertilized pastures. We worm as necessary and supplement with mineral / protein tubs. All of our sheep are registsered with the Painted Desert Sheep Society unless they don't meet our standards. If the standards are not met, they are sold unregistered for pets or table fare.
